Working in High Temperatures
Although the UK has no legal maximum workplace temperature, employers must provide a reasonable working environment under Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance.
Below are some ideas to help reduce the risk of heat stroke and heat exhaustion in the extreme temperatures that we’re experiencing in the UK this week:
⏰ Follow the “11 am Rule”
Where possible, schedule physically demanding tasks outside the 11:00 am–3:00 pm period, when temperatures and UV levels are highest.
🏗️ Reduce Heat Exposure
Move workstations away from hot water pipes, industrial equipment, and south-facing windows to minimise heat build-up.
💧 Promote Hydration
Provide easy access to chilled drinking water and encourage staff to drink regularly while limiting excessive caffeine and sugary energy drinks.
⚠️ Assess High-Risk Areas
Monitor employees working in top-floor spaces, poorly ventilated offices, and urban heat hotspots, and provide localised cooling where needed.
