April brings several changes to COVID-19 rules in England that will effect you the Employer.

Free Lateral Flow Tests (LFT)

The government will no longer provide free LFT’s for the general public.

Self-isolation guidance

Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms will be asked to “exercise personal responsibility”.

While you’re no longer legally required to self-isolate if you have COVID-19, you should try to stay at home and away from others to avoid passing on the virus.

Anyone who is too sick to work will still be entitled to statutory sick pay (SSP) provided they comply with your sickness absence reporting procedure.

Risk Assessments

The requirement to consider COVID-19 in your risk assessments will be removed, however it is for you the Employer to take responsibility for implementing mitigations that are appropriate for your business circumstances.

So in short please don’t do away with your COVID control measures as you still have a duty to identify workplace risks and reduce them to the lowest possible level.

  • Consider what control measures you should keep in place.
  • Consider the needs of your employees at greater risk including those with low immune system as they are at a higher risk of serious illness.
  • Consider the risks of COVID positive workers attending the workplace.
