A scheme set up to recycle many of the several million hard hats that are thrown away each year is celebrating repurposing more than 10,000 end of life protective hard hats.
The National Hard Hat Recycling Scheme was set up to be a user friendly method for hard hats to bypass the typical waste disposal routes to allow them to go into reprocessing. The shredded hats are separated into their polymer elements and melted into new polymer pellets, the universal raw material for all plastic manufacturing.
The scheme now has over 50 members from a range of sectors.
